Relief Spark volunteers have collected, sorted, packed and loaded - then unloaded donated supplies to families in need in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Alabama in weeks after Hurricane Katrina. Since November 2005 we have been on the ground working with families and helping them rebuild their homes and lives. We offer a variety of programs and projects for volunteers of all ages! We also offer housing (Uptown) and meals for volunteers working.
Relief Spark supports a network of non-profits and therefore we offer many programs to choose from while staying with us:
ARTS AND CULTURE DAY
OPERATION GREEN LIGHT
Exchange light bulbs for energy efficient light bulbs (CFL) and reduce not only kilowatts of power by most importantly carbon in households. In all you could help families save $1,334.00 over a 5-year period! (to read more, sign up to volunteer today)!
OPERATION ANIMAL RESCUE
Walk the pups, clean up after the pups, feed/water the pups, play with the kitties, clean up after the kitties (much easier that the pups), feed/water the kitties and love the pets...(to read more, sign up to volunteer today)!
OPERATION UPKEEP
Many families are being fined upwards $100.00/day for not taking care of their flooded property while waiting on insurance settlements and/or the Road Home Grant program to come through. Many more families don’t live in the same neighborhood…even same state making taking care of their property even that much more challenging. OPERATION CITY PARK
Relief Spark has adopted about 5 acres within this 1300 acre park! Our space is known as the Couturie Park & Arboretum. We have two small lakes, green space, the tallest “hill” in New Orleans and many, many trails. Our volunteers are responsible for clearing dead plants and trees, laying mulch, planting trees, watering and taking care of new trees and saplings, removing old signs, laying down railroad ties, removing trash and generally keeping the area beautiful.....(to read more, sign up to volunteer today)!
OPERATION ST. BERNARD COMMUNITY
Get involved with residents who are rebuilding by supporting the St. Bernard Community Center located in Arabi, LA (next to the Lower 9th Ward). Volunteers are needed every day to sort donations in distribution, build out the laundry room, data-entry, filing and relief kitchen that offers dinner to residents and volunteers. DRAGON CAFÉ – ST. GEORGES EPISCOPAL CHURCH

OPERATION REBUILD – “HURST FAMILY HOME”

HOUSE GUTTING/DEBRIS REMOVAL

V-DAY PROMOTION
This program is being led by Relief Spark in association with the creator and Founder of “The Vagina Monologues” and its non-profit arm “V-Day.” V-Day will stage a once in a lifetime event featuring international performances of The Vagina Monologues by SALMA HAYEK, OPRAH WINFREY, JANE FONDA, EVE ENSLER, JENNIFER HUDSON, GLENN CLOSE, JULIA STILES, ASHLEY JUDD, SALLY FIELD, MARISA TOMEI, CALPERNIA ADDAMS, ROSARIO DAWSON, KERRY WASHINGTON, ELLEN DEGENERES, AND MUSICIANS JOSS STONE, musical guests including COMMON, EVE, CHARMAINE NEVILLE, V-Day activists from across the globe including Kenya, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Philippines, Democratic Republic of Congo and Eastern Europe, men standing up for women and much more.
The evening will open minds and hearts and raise much needed attention and funds for groups working to end violence against women and girls around the world, and in New Orleans and the Gulf South.
Our goal is to promote the event being held in New Orleans on April 11th and 12th by passing out fliers and postcards to households in various neighborhoods and by asking restaurants and businesses to post information and pass out fliers to customers.
